MORE ABOUT THIS 'VILLAGE DE CARACTERE'With its stone architecture against a backdrop of wooded hills, Dauphin is one of the most beautiful perched villages in Haute-Provence. The plain which stretches at its feet is steeped in history.
In Roman times, the Via Domitia, the Roman road linking Spain to Italy ran across it (called the Chemin Seinet here). It was only in the Middle Ages that Dauphin migrated to the heights which were already occupied by a fort and you can still see the towers and part of the ramparts. All year round you can climb to the top of the dungeon to see the magnificent panorama of the Luberon and its forests. From the terrace of the former castle you get a superb view of the villages of Saint-Maime, Mane, and the citadel of Forcalquier in the distance.
Today, apart from farming and local produce (honey, farm produce) Dauphin has seen a number of artists and craftsmen come to live in its walls.
