Medieval TownMORE ABOUT THIS 'VILLAGE DE CARACTERE'Perched on a rocky spur on a loop in the Var river, Entrevaux is proud of its two thousand year old rich and tumultuous past .
Set in the middle of olive groves planted on teraces, and in limestone polished by centuries under an ever-blue sky, the town is an important historical spot: Roman town (bishopric of Glandèves), medieval town, a Vauban fort under the reign of Louis XIV and the frontier of France until 1860!
The din of the canons died away long ago, but Entrevaux, accessible over a drawbridge, has kept the charm of centuries gone: narrow tall house, squares and fountains, three tiers of roof-tiles and balconies, winding alleys and inconvenient stairways, barracks and bartizans, bridges and towers, shops and boutiques, cathedral with sumptuous sculpted walnut doors.
And for discovering regional produce (fruit juices, dried beef secca, honey, gingerbread), take the Train des Pignes and its regular autorails or its steam railcar which is a listed Historical Monument.
