MORE ABOUT THIS "VILLAGE DE CARACTERE"From Lurs, perched on a spur overlooking the Durance valley, the Valensole plateau and the Digne pre-Alps to the east, and the Pays de Forcalquier to the west, you are looking down on the whole district!
« Village et Cité de Caractère » listed and labeled site, this village with its well-proportioned architecture said to have been founded by Charlemagne has been tastefully restored: stone streets and walls, pink roof tiles, genoise cornices and little windows.
A superb natural backdrop which sets off the summer residence of the Bishop Princes of Sisteron: on the south-facing slopes, olive-trees cultivated on terraces roll down to the Durance; to the west, according to the seasons, the fields of tulips, grain or vegetables are a patchwork of colours; to the north, a back-country of garrigues filled with the smell of thyme meets the wooded slopes of the Montagne de Lure. |
