MORE ABOUT SAINT-ANDRESaint-André lies in the middle of a wide corrie formed at the confluence of the Issole and Verdon valleys.
Founded in XIIIth century, the town has as tumultuous history as the rivers around: to prevent their untimely overflowing, the Gros Canal was built and was to become the basis of Saint-andré's economic development up until XIXth century and is still present.
After having thrived on sheet making, the Train des Pignes station was built over a century ago and the Castillon dam from 1926 to 1947, and the town languished in its calm valley open on the blue waters of the lake of Castillon which has everything to offer in the way of water sports.
Gateway to the Verdon Natural Regional Park and on the territory of the Geology Reserve of Haute-Provence, Saint-André is also an important centre for hang-gliding and paragliding which regularly hosts big international and international competitions. |

VILLAGES AROUND |
- Angles : at the end of an arm of the lake of Castillon, Angles looks at if it is imbedded in the landscape. But after this first impression, you can see that the village is surrounded by vast pastures and a very beautiful natural environment perfect for superb walks. List of SELF-CATERING GITES in the district.
- Argens : most certainly one of the oldest villages in Haute-Provence, has been attached to La Mure for a few years.
- Lambruisse : in the Encure valley, in the middle of a gorge with striking botanical contrasts, facing the bare rock to the south and a cool fir forest to the north where you can find rasperries and see roe deer. List of SELF-CATERING GITES in the district.
- La Mure : nestled in a soothing mountain landscape where the Issole and Verdon rivers meet, where the valley widens out into vast green spaces, La Mure has a remarkable architectural unity. List of SELF-CATERING GITES in the district.
- Moriez : surrounded by large farming areas, the village stretches along the Nice road, above the Lake of Castillon. The centre is typical of Provencal villages with narrow streets and tall houses all closely packed together. Worth a visit: Roman remains, medieval dungeon, church of Saint-Barthélémy (XVth century), nobelmen's houses (XVIIIth century). List of SELF-CATERING GITES in the district.
- Saint-Julien-du-Verdon : village perched on a slope running down to the blue waters fo the lake of Castillon. Even if most of the land was drowned in 1948, when the dam was filled, the lake with its surface area of over 500 ha is now a paradise for bathing, fishing and water sports.
